O Misc Note: I had initially written the guide after BNW (Brave New World) was released but before the patch that changed (nerfed) the Tradition policy tree. In 2 player games, since you don't have to worry about being double teamed or being outpaced in science by a third party, you only have to know how to fight. Importantly, this is NOT a duel (2 player) strategy guide. Usually, experienced players choose to let the computer pick a random civ for them, so this guide will present play strategies that work across all civs- except Venice. O Baseline Setup: This numbers cited (like gold gosts) assume you are playing an online 6-8 player Free For All (FFA) with quick pace, simultaneous turns, and at least the two main expansions. This guide assumes a basic familiarity with game mechanics, but seeks to explain advanced strategies for how to maximize resources in order to be a competitive player throughout the game. The goal here is to help less experiecned players compete with players who measure playtime in thousands of hours.
This guide contains gameplay concepts players should be familiar with if they intend to play multiplayer games online with the general public against players that know how to play.
